We depend on our environment for a multitude of things. To name a few, trees to produce oxygen we breathe, water for drinking, and land for a garden or crops. But the way that we treat our environment lacks the care that we actually have for it.
We cut down trees and plant more, but we pick flowers all the time without planting new ones to replace the ones we've picked. Most of the time, we tell all about how we care so much for our planet, but we turn around and throw our trash on the ground. And it's not like it only happens here where we are, but it happens all over the world. If this continues to be a problem, the world as we know it will be filled with trash with not enough facilities to get rid of it all.
We unknowingly dump harmful chemicals into not only the water, but also into the ground where our food grows. We throw away things that can be recycled and recycle things that are trash. If we continue to do these things in our community, other communities will follow. In India and China there are already problems with waste and trash, so will we allow ourselves to be the next country to fall down and ruins our environment? Or will we be the ones to change and become the country that revolutionizes our resources to save the environment?
During our project, we were told to research about things that were an issue, not just in our community, but also around the world. When we were told to get in a group of 3-4 students, we concluded that environment was the thing that connected our topics of overfishing, food security, and animal extinction. At first glance, we were kind of confused with which angle we wanted to use, but quickly realized that it would be easier to show how we use the environment and how we sometimes take it for granted. We use the environment for good when we use it for things like hunting and fishing, but we also take advantage of it when we overfish or litter.
But that’s not the point. Although we’ve littered and often overfished or maybe even poached, the reality of it is that we can change it. Make it better not only for us, but for generations to come. We can pick up litter when we see it on the ground, only bag animals within the bag limit, and even lessen the amount of food that we let go to waste on an everyday basis.
This isn’t a one-man job though. In order to fully help our planet, we need the help of everyone. And we don’t have to do it alone, we can invite groups of people to come out and help us make our city, state/province, or even country look beautiful. And isn’t that what everyone needs? A little beauty in even the most nastiest parts of life.
